Millefiori – Fabian Oefner

Swiss photographer Fabian Oefner creates these eye-popping images by mixing water color with ferrofluid for this series aptly titled Millefiori, an Italian term meaning “thousand flowers”.

If you’re like me, you’re probably not familiar with ferrofluid, but it’s pretty fascinating stuff for the artist & science geek alike. When placed under a magnetic field, this black liquid creates geometric barriers of iron particles. This allows Oefner to add multiple watercolors that remain separated by the ferrofluid and form these incredible thumbnail-sized images.

You can find more of Oefner’s photographic experiments at his website: http://www.fabianoefner.com/
