Shwood for Atlantic Records Collection http://experimentwithnature.com/02-videos/shwood-for-atlantic-records-collection/ http://experimentwithnature.com/02-videos/shwood-for-atlantic-records-collection/#comments Mon, 13 Jul 2015 20:43:21 +0000 http://experimentwithnature.com/?p=4342 Atlantic Records is classic. It’s revolutionary. It has pushed the envelope of popular music since it introduced jazz and R&B to the masses 60 years ago. And now Shwood is pleased to play a role in Atlantic’s legacy of experimentation and quality.

Introducing the Shwood for Atlantic Records Collection. Two versions of our classic Canby shape, both integrating genuine Atlantic vinyl records for a look as effortless as the music it embodies.

Built Not Bought http://experimentwithnature.com/03-found/built-not-bought/ http://experimentwithnature.com/03-found/built-not-bought/#comments Thu, 16 Apr 2015 18:18:21 +0000 http://experimentwithnature.com/?p=4160 Great video feature on the value of making things by the crew at Visual Revolutionary. Check out the profile they put together of Greg Fuller and his perspective on the resurgence of the “Maker” culture.

Greg offers a compelling opinion on how the majority of the work most of us do these days is somewhat intangible, leaving us often without the physical proof of a product at the end of a long days’ work. He feels this desire for tangible creation is fueling the resurgence of our desire to make, create, and produce.

Excited for more episodes of this series!

The Diatomist http://experimentwithnature.com/03-found/the-diatomist/ http://experimentwithnature.com/03-found/the-diatomist/#comments Wed, 25 Mar 2015 18:07:37 +0000 http://experimentwithnature.com/?p=4125 Nature is seldom matched in its beauty & simplicity. A prime example of this simple form & function are diatoms. Located in nearly every place that there is standing water, diatoms are single celled algae that encase themselves in beautiful glass shells. There are hundreds of thousands of varieties of diatoms all that build their own unique forms. They range in size from 5 microns to 200 microns – for a sense of scale, one micron is one thousandth of a millimeter. Diatom arrangement first began in the early 1800’s after the advent of the microscope, and was initially practiced by microscopists and works were sold to amateur naturalists for display at small gatherings. Nearly invisible to the naked eye, each arrangement could fit within a period of an average font size.

Fast-forward to today, diatom arrangement is virtually a lost art form, with the only living practitioner being Klaus Kemp. Watch the video above for a profile of the artist and how he researched and mastered this once lost art form, and see more examples of his work below. The dexterity and dedication required in finding and arranging these tiny forms is truly an Experiment with Nature. To find out more about Klaus and his work, visit his website here.

The Newspaper Collection http://experimentwithnature.com/06-experiments/the-newspaper-collection/ http://experimentwithnature.com/06-experiments/the-newspaper-collection/#comments Mon, 16 Mar 2015 22:03:55 +0000 http://experimentwithnature.com/?p=4097 This project started as an experiment. An experiment in transformation, reconstruction, and repurposing. To try to return paper to something like its original state.

It took us over a year of experimentation, research, and development to settle on this proprietary technique, shown in the video above.  Bad ideas, false starts, and near misses are all part of this process, but you eventually find that one thing that works. And that’s what this project represents: It’s the manifestation of an idea that was willed into existence. And it made for some pretty cool looking glasses too.

To make each pair of glasses, 1600 feet of newsprint is wound up into a 4-inch diameter “log” and these logs are then sawn into thin plies to reveal a unique, wood-like texture. The finished product is eyewear completely unique in appearance with dense lines, swirling grain, and just a hint of text.

See some detailed process images below and find out more about the collection here.

The New Shwood Eugene http://experimentwithnature.com/02-videos/the-new-shwood-eugene/ http://experimentwithnature.com/02-videos/the-new-shwood-eugene/#comments Wed, 17 Jul 2013 23:05:46 +0000 http://experimentwithnature.com/?p=2956 For the release of our new “Eugene” style sunglasses, we took to the streets (or road, rather) in a 1967 Shelby Cobra GT350 – a pair of the Eugenes in hand – and saw where it took us. The rural, backcountry roads were quiet and ripe for some meditative speed; For that, the Cobra was the perfect vehicle and the Eugenes the perfect counterpart.

The Eugene’s sleek silhouette combines a metal rim and bridge with dark, subtle hardwoods for a timeless and refined look.  The simple aesthetic compliments a wide variety of face shapes, a perfect choice for anyone desiring sharp, classic style.

Google Street View Hyperlapse http://experimentwithnature.com/03-found/google-street-view-hyperlapse/ http://experimentwithnature.com/03-found/google-street-view-hyperlapse/#comments Wed, 24 Apr 2013 18:34:00 +0000 http://experimentwithnature.com/?p=2765 Teehan + Lax Labs have created a new open-sourced tool in creating hyperlapse videos (videos using time-lapse techniques combined with moving camera angles) pulling the frames directly from Google Maps. What this means is that, through the T+L Labs website, it’s possible to create a custom hyperlapse of any point in the world that that is accessible via Google Street View, by simply setting a Start, Finish and Focal point.

While the site is limited to 60 frames of animation, the source code is available to developers for further experimentation via Github.

Watch a hyperlapse that we made of crossing our beloved Burnside Bridge in Portland.
