Shwood’s newest mixtape – No.6 – checks back in with some bands that have been featured previously and introduces some new faces as well. Among mixtape ‘rookies’ are Wooden Indian Burial Ground slinging raucous, feedback-laced sing along rock n’ roll; Pure Bathing Culture channeling Cyndi Lauper’s softer side into the ebbs and swells of an ocean at the magic hour; and Minden manhandling serpentine melodies over subtly synthy harmonies and completely danceable beats.

Shwood favorites (and Mixtape and Spots alums), Aan are set to release a new 7″ record on February 5th (via Cool Summer Records). We’re especially into the B-Side of the record “Spiritual Provisions”.

Shwood Mixtape No. 5

Showcasing a different side of Portland’s deep, diverse, and often eccentric music scene, Shwood’s Mixtape No. 5 is all about the beat. While the cliché of Portland is one of bearded men crooning over plucked acoustic guitars in coffee shops (and it’s not entirely untrue), the city also has a rich and rapidly growing electronic music scene where artists have opted instead for wiring up samplers and synthesizers in crowded warehouses. STRFKR (formerly Starfucker) lead off the mixtape with a massive wall of arpeggiated synths anchored by live drums and a saccharine pop sensibility; Nu Shooz (famous for their classic 1986 hit “I Can’t Wait”) toss in their recently-unearthed-and-released time capsule of an early 90’s new jack dance party; and Glass Candy wrap up the mix with a icy, 7-minute melodramatic, new-wave synth saga that practically insists on a late night road-trip down the PCH.

Tame Impala

“Classic” is an adjective that has always resonated well with us here at Shwood. Few contemporary bands have been able to epitomize this sound as precisely as Australia’s Tame Impala, so it’s been quite difficult to take their sophomore LP “Lonerism” off repeat since its release earlier this month. Maintaining a balance of equal parts hard rock riffs with ample breathing room to explore psychedelic textures, the band has executed a brilliant album that will only further solidify their cult status.

If you caught the debut video of the MAKERS series, you may have noticed that fellow Portlanders Typhoon lent us the song “Summer Home” from their latest EP, “A New Kind of House,” for the background track. While preparing to release their follow-up LP, the band has premiered a cinematic teaser trailer of the upcoming album “White Lighter,” which will also be accompanied by a west-coast tour.

Nurses

Aaron Chapman from the band Nurses met up with us earlier in the summer and showed us around his favorite spot: Unthank Park in Northeast Portland. He shot some hoops with his girlfriend and shared the park’s significance to him and how it helped shape Nurses’ newest album “Dracula”.

Shadows on Stars, Palmas

Friends of Shwood, Shadows on Stars, recently put out a new music video that features some great shots of our glasses.

Bon Iver Deluxe Video Series

We were pretty excited to see Justin Vernon of Bon Iver wearing the Shwood Bushmills shades yesterday:

We were also excited to discover the Bon Iver Deluxe video series. Directed by cinematographers Isaac Gale and David Jensen, the series features seven videos of songs from Bon Iver’s self-titled album. While each video is diverse in concept, they all feature stunning cinematic manipulation of natural imagery. The full series can be found here.
